I read an article in today’s Toronto Star about a little boy named Parker DesLauriers who was born with ADA-deficient severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) or better known as the boy in the bubble disease. Four month old Parker has to remain in a reverse isolation room at Sick Kids in TO. He’s being protected from infections which his body has no immune system to ward off. His parents are currently working towards taking him to Italy for a procedure to try to repair the problem.
His dad has been keeping a blog (Parker’s Battle with ADA) to chronicle the boy’s life. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a child with this condition. To know that you can visit him but you can’t really hold and cuddle him like you would a healthy child. Well, he can be held and cuddled, he just isn’t able to experience it like other kids.
