Tomorrow, April 1st, is what is known as April Fools Day, it has also been refererred to as All Fools Day. It is not an official holiday but does have some followers. The day is meant to be a day where tricks are played on unsuspecting people, usually getting them to be believe what isn’t true. The convention is that if the trick is not played by noon, then the joke is on the trickster.

Wikepedia carries a list of memorable April Fools pranks that have been pulled off. The Book of Days carries even more interesting reports of common forms of pranks used through the centuries.

The origins of this observance appears to be shrouded in speculation and little hard fact. Some have suggested that the day is a commemoration of the dove and raven as they searched for dry land during the Great Flood. Read the rest of this entry

Snow Goes, Nature Renews

In the early morning light this morning I stood gazing out my kitchen window as I waited for the kettle to boil for tea (yes sometimes I drink tea instead of coffee). It was a gray start to the day today (still is rather overcast) which probably is why I noticed how much green was starting to appear outside my window.

There is a field between me and the barn next door, apparently it was seeded with a crop last fall as I first noticed the even lines of green just starting to rise above the soil, then I noticed amongst the dead grass from last fall, the first green of my new lawn.

By now, a lot of people are starting to think and plan for summer. They are looking forward to the hot weather and opportunities for leisure and parties. Me, I just enjoy spring. I enjoy seeing the earth emerge from the snow and come to life. Read the rest of this entry

Well, spring has officially arrived at my house. I know that officially spring arrived at 7:45am on Thursday morning but in my house it arrives a bit differently.

The 'baby' Fawnya - 1 yr oldSee I live in a small ‘Ontario cottage’ which is a storey and half home. I’ve been told that in days gone by local taxes were assessed based on how many storeys your home was. By not building a full storey, people saved on their taxes while haivng space enough for their family. The half storey was usually used for sleeping space.

I sleep on the main floor and the half storey is used primarily for storage and extra sleeping space if I happen to have guests over, which is pretty rare.

Several years ago, I had my dad make me up a trap door that closes down over the stairs. It’s insulated on the topside so when I close it in the fall it slows down the ability for cold winter air to travel down the stairs running up my heating bill. I run a heater up there to keep the temp around 13C over the winter. Read the rest of this entry

We Will Remember Them

In honour of our fallen CanadiansThey shall grow not old, as we who are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn

What Are Your Waters of Life?

“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink”.  As the scripture has said, “Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water” — Jn 7:37-38

Water is what sustains us in life. In these days of global warming one of the great fears is that water, particularly clean water, will become a scarce resource. Predictions have been made that some where in the future wars will be fought over access to water.

Mineral water being poured from a bottle into ...

There are different kinds of thirst. There is the thirst that we slack with water or some other beverage. Some days it takes more beverage than others to quench that thirst. It is thirst from within that can drive us on quests of a lifetime. The thirst to know and understand is the thirst that drives us through our lives.

My inner thirst at times seems to come and go but it never really ends. There is much I want to know and to understand but nothing so great as looking ever deeper into this faith which I have chosen to embrace. Read the rest of this entry
